Members of the Steering Committee of the CGIAR Research Program on Grain Legumes (Grain Legumes) in Rabat, Morocco on 12 and 13 May. The steering committee provides overall strategic direction, inputs for enhancement of operation and building strategic alliances with partners, and monitor the progress of the program. The members include the Director Generals (or designates) of the CGIAR centers, donor representatives and other partners.
Dr William D. Dar as the Director General of ICRISAT (lead center), chaired the committee and the members: Dr Abdulkadir Aydogan, Director General, General Directorate of Agricultural Research (GDAR) in Turkey; Dr Flavio Breseghello, Director General, Embrapa Rice and Beans; Dr Swapan Datta, Deputy Director General for Research, Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR); Dr Ruben Echeverria, Director General, International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT); Dr Ylva Hillbur, Deputy Director General, IITA represented Dr Nteranya Sanginga, Director General of IITA and Dr Mahmoud Solh, Director General, International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) were in attendance.
Other members namely, Dr Jeffrey Ehlers, Program Officer Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Dr Asnake Fikre, Director of Crop Research Process, EIAR were not able to attend the meeting. Dr Ehlers briefly joined the meeting by electronic means and provided his inputs as a member.
Dr Maarten van Ginkel, DDG, ICARDA; Dr Michael Baum, Director Biodiversity and Integrated Gene Management Program, ICARDA and Dr Shiv Agrawal, focal point for Grain Legumes at ICARDA were present in the meeting as observers and Dr Shoba Sivasankar, Director, CGIAR Research Program on Dryland cereals recorded the minutes.
Dr Noel Ellis, Director, CGIAR Research Program on Grain Legumes presented the progress of the program activities, Output Targets (OT) and its contribution to the Intermediate Development Outcomes (IDOs).
The need for quality data to be held in an appropriate repository was identified as important for the successful implementation of the research program.
Emphasis on the importance for the nutritional value of grain legumes within the research program was also discussed.
Collaboration opportunities with other CGIAR Research Programs, centers, regional and national programs was also deliberated.
Discussion on Plan of Work and Budget 2014 (POWB), extension phase proposal, governance, quality of publications were among other items that were deliberated by the committee.
Grain Legumes was officially launched in February 2013 , and this was the third meeting of the Steering Committee. The next meeting will be held in September 2014.
