Five Strategic Components are GrainLegumes’ ‘ways of doing’ each Product line. In essence, Strategic Components are the areas of work, approaches and methods that scientists employ to generate Product Line outputs. They ensure that Product Line development is done in a rigorous manner that most effectively contributes towards the CGIAR System Level Outcomes of reducing hunger, poverty, malnutrition and environmental degradation.
Since the same five Strategic Components are pursued in all eight Product Lines, the Strategic Components also serve a valuable purpose as a way to cross-fertilise the Product Lines by sharing competencies, innovative ideas and best practices.
Strategic Component 1 – Analyzing demand and setting research priorities
Identify priority research and development needs impacting farmers, seed sellers, processors, marketers, consumers and policymakers.
Strategic Component 2 – Developing productive varieties and management practices
Accelerate the development of more productive and nutritious legumes varieties and crop and pest management practices for resilient cropping systems of smallholder farmers.
Strategic Component 3 – Facilitating legume seed and technology delivery systems
Develop and facilitate efficient legume seed production and technology delivery systems for smallholder farmers.
Strategic Component 4 – Enhancing post-harvest processing and market opportunities
Add value to grain legumes, and increase social and environmental benefits captured by the poor worldwide, especially women.
Strategic Component 5 – Fostering innovation and managing knowledge
Partnerships, capacities, and knowledge sharing to enhance grain legume research-for-development impacts.
