Flagship 3: Trait Deployment

FP3: Trait deployment

FP3_Trait DeploymentFlagship 3 uses biological knowledge together with genetic resources to develop farmer- and market-preferred grain legume cultivars and associated crop management practices that optimize productivity in smallholder farmer fields.

FP3 uses the knowledge, information and understanding from FP1 and FP2; and combines this with other useful traits using integrated breeding approaches by deploying tools, technologies and platforms from FP7 for the development of technologies that can be made available for adoption by farmers. These technologies may be varieties, inoculant strains, bio-control agents or management practices.

FP3 derives the genetic variation obtained in FP2 and. These novel breeding tools and methods will be used to enhance efficiency and precision of breeding process.

The lines and genotypes generated will be made available to breeders to adapt these to local, national and agro-ecological conditions as well as market needs. In some countries, depending on the partnership with NARS, varieties are taken beyond the pre-breeding stage to deliver improved varieties.

The adoption of improved varieties developed through the efforts of FP3 will be enhanced by strengthening the seed systems in FP4.
